REMINDER/It's Amazing What You Can Do With Hard Work and Kindness; More than 7,000 Washington Mutual Volunteers Tackle Community Revitalization Projects During National NeighborWorks Week

              300 Washington Mutual volunteers expected
                    at Portland project on June 8

WHAT:   In partnership with the Portland Housing Center, more than 300
        Washington Mutual volunteers will spruce up over 20 yards
        throughout the St. John's neighborhood in celebration of
        National NeighborWorks Week.

        National NeighborWorks Week, an annual campaign to restore
        homes and revitalize neighborhoods in hundreds of communities
        across America, was founded in 1984 by the Neighborhood
        Reinvestment Corporation, and its nationwide network of
        NeighborWorks affiliates.

WHO:    Ken Leander, senior vice president and Washington Mutual group
        manager for consumer banking in Portland, and Charlotte Ellis,
        Washington Mutual's consumer regional manager for Portland,

WHERE:  8333 N. Hendricks (intersection of North Columbia Boulevard
        and North Charleston Avenue in St. John's neighborhood in
        Portland, Ore.)

WHY:    As the affordable housing crisis worsens in America, an
        increasing number of people are paying more than 50 percent of
        their income for housing or living in substandard housing or
        both. For many people, keeping up with rising housing costs
        means less available income for basic maintenance or other
