REMINDER/It's Amazing What You Can Do With Hard Work and Kindness; More than 7,000 Washington Mutual Volunteers Tackle Community Revitalization Projects During National NeighborWorks Week

REMINDER...For Saturday (June 8)

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

              300 Washington Mutual volunteers expected
at Portland project on June 8

WHAT: In partnership with the Portland Housing Center, more than 300
Washington Mutual volunteers will spruce up over 20 yards
throughout the St. John's neighborhood in celebration of
        National NeighborWorks Week.

National NeighborWorks Week, an annual campaign to restore
homes and revitalize neighborhoods in hundreds of communities
across America, was founded in 1984 by the Neighborhood
Reinvestment Corporation, and its nationwide network of
        NeighborWorks affiliates.

WHO: Ken Leander, senior vice president and Washington Mutual group
manager for consumer banking in Portland, and Charlotte Ellis,
Washington Mutual's consumer regional manager for Portland,
will be among the volunteers and will be available for
        interviews.

Charlotte Ellis - cell phone: 503.238.3548.

WHEN: Saturday, June 8
        9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: 8333 N. Hendricks (intersection of North Columbia Boulevard
and North Charleston Avenue in St. John's neighborhood in
        Portland, Ore.)

WHY: As the affordable housing crisis worsens in America, an
increasing number of people are paying more than 50 percent of
their income for housing or living in substandard housing or
both. For many people, keeping up with rising housing costs
means less available income for basic maintenance or other
        needs.

Additional information: This is the second year Washington
Mutual has been the national sponsor of National NeighborWorks
Week and the bank's commitment is valued at more than $3.5
        million this year.
