REMINDER/Washington Mutual Invites Community to ''Putt for Education''; Fund Raiser to be at Gaba Community Fair

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 2001--

WHAT: Washington Mutual's (NYSE:WM) tenth annual Putt for Education
is coming to the Portland area to help raise money for local
schools.
         Participants in the contest will attempt to sink three out of
         three shots on a miniature putting green. If successful, the 
         putter wins a $50 donation to the school of his or her 
         choice. The contest is free, open to anyone (including 
         children), and all equipment is provided by Washington 
         Mutual.

         Washington Mutual raised $120,000 last year in the Putt for 
         Education program, and altogether the program has contributed
         more than $1 million in the past eight years to local 
         schools.

WHEN: Saturday, May 19, 2001
1 to 4 p.m.


WHERE: Gaba Community Fair, 10011 Square Halsey (on the corner
across from Washington Mutual's Gateway Financial Center,
1111 N.E. 102nd Ave.)


VISUALS: People of all ages will take a turn on the green, lining up
their shots and attempting to sink three out of three putts.


WHY: Washington Mutual is the sponsor of the Washington Mutual
Pro-Am at the Fred Meyer Challenge. The golf tournament will
be held August 5 at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in
Aloha, Ore. As part of its long-standing commitment to
education, Washington Mutual hosts the Putt for Education to
get the community involved in supporting local schools.
