Michael Solender Named WaMu's Chief Legal Officer
SEATTLE, Jun 04, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- WaMu (NYSE:WM) today announced that Michael S. Solender, 44, has been named the company's Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. He will be responsible for overseeing the company's legal, compliance and government relations functions. Solender will report to Kerry Killinger, WaMu's CEO, and will be a member of the company's Executive Committee. Solender succeeds Stewart M. Landefeld, Interim Chief Legal Officer, who is returning to private practice at Perkins Coie, Seattle.

Solender is joining WaMu from The Bear Stearns Companies Inc., where he was General Counsel and managed the 500-person Legal and Compliance Department.

Prior to joining Bear Stearns in February 2002, Solender was a partner at the Washington, D.C.-based Arnold & Porter, a law firm specializing in litigation and regulatory matters. Previously, Solender was General Counsel of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, where he received the Chairman's Award for distinguished service.

Solender graduated from Yale Law School, where he was Senior Editor of the Yale Law Journal. In addition, he graduated from Columbia University, earning a B.A. summa cum laude.
