WaMu Ranked Highest in the West and Midwest Regions for Customer Satisfaction in Retail Banking

J.D. Power and Associates Annual Rankings Released

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2007--Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE:WM), one of the nation's leading banks for consumers and small businesses, was ranked the highest retail bank in customer satisfaction in two regions of the U.S. by J.D. Power and Associates, Westlake Village, CA.

"We're thrilled that our customers are so satisfied with the service they receive at WaMu," said Kerry Killinger, WaMu's chairman and CEO. "Our business is all about the customer and helping them save time and money, and reduce hassles. To this end, we work hard to provide terrific customer service at every touch point and we're pleased that our customers believe we're making progress toward achieving this important goal."

The rankings, published today by J.D. Power and Associates, reflect surveys conducted with consumers in six regions across the U.S. Of those regions, WaMu was ranked highest in the West and Midwest regions. WaMu was the only bank to rank highest in more than one region. The West region encompasses banks in Washington, Oregon and California. The Midwest region is made up of banks in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

"Every day our colleagues strive to provide industry-leading customer service by creating a simple, positive banking experience," said James Corcoran, president, Retail Banking. "This prestigious award validates their hard work, and encourages all of us to reach higher and continue developing ways to make banking even better for WaMu customers."

WaMu Continues to Receive Kudos

The J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction ranking is the latest in a series of accolades recently received by WaMu.

Just last month, WaMu was judged by consumers as the most highly regarded banking company in the U.S., based on corporate reputation. According to the Reputation Institute, WaMu commanded the highest score of all banking companies and was the only bank included in the list of top 50 corporate reputations in the U.S.

Also in May, WaMu was named the leader in online checking account growth in its 15 footprint states. According to first quarter analysis by comScore Inc., 35% of online banking consumers selected a WaMu checking account. Success of the account has been attributed to industry leading customer benefits and the industry's fastest account opening, which features an innovative paperless account process.

In March, BusinessWeek named WaMu a Top 25 Service Champ - the only bank to make the list. Earlier in the year, Fortune designated WaMu a Blue Ribbon Company for 2006 as a result of its listing on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For, America's Most Admired Companies, Fortune 500 and Global 500.
