ADVISORY/Chicago's Socorro Sandoval School Students Celebrate Smart Savings All the Way to Their Own Bank

Washington Mutual's School Savings(R) program teaches youngsters money management habits

WHAT: Hundreds of young students at Socorro Sandoval School on Chicago's South Side will gather allowances, couch change and birthday money to deposit into their new free, interest-bearing savings accounts which they will open with the help of the bank, school educators and parent volunteers. The event is part of Washington Mutual's 80-year-old School Savings program, which partners with school representatives to establish a bank-like setting for students and teaches children at a young age about saving for the future.

"Mini bank branch" - To invigorate the savings program at Socorro Sandoval and encourage students to begin putting money away for a rainy day, Washington Mutual bankers will set up a mini bank branch in the school cafeteria, complete with bank visuals and a Teller Tower, one of the trademark elements of Washington Mutual's unique retail banking stores. With each new deposit, students earn points for prizes, such as lunch boxes and backpacks.

WHEN: Wednesday, November 2 at 10 a.m.

WHERE: Socorro Sandoval School
5534 St. Louis, Chicago, 60629

WHY: Washington Mutual has a long standing commitment of supporting education and believes that as a bank, it has a responsibility to help young children begin laying the foundation for sound money management skills. Nearly 280,000 students, in more than 1,500 schools nationwide, participate in the School Savings program.
