|Earvin 'Magic' Johnson in Newark Wednesday for Urban Home Ownership Initiative|
A WHAT: Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Johnson Development Corporation (JDC) and former star of the Los Angeles Lakers, will join executives from Washington Mutual and local Newark residents for the grand opening of the first home loan center in Newark, N.J. to bring the dream of home ownership to the city's underserved communities. A Mr. Johnson's mission to improve the quality of life for families in urban areas is now expanding beyond African Americans to members of the Latino and Asian communities. The Washington Mutual Home Loan Center in Newark is the 26th to have risen in an inner-city urban neighborhood. A Wednesday's opening also marks the introduction of a free, four-part financial education and credit-building program called Solid Start(TM). Upon completion of Solid Start, the prospective homebuyer will be in a good position to be approved for his or her first home loan. Together they have opened 25 home loan centers in New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Houston, the Inland Empire, and now Newark. The new Newark home loan center is located in the heart of an underserved community that needs it most, and will be staffed by multi-lingual members of the community.
