|Statement from Washington Mutual Regarding National Identity Theft Case:|
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 25, 2002--At this time, we believe that none of our customers have been affected in this attempted identity theft case through the unauthorized use of our subscriber code.
Early last summer we were notified that potentially up to 500 of our customers might have been impacted by the identity theft ring.
We immediately notified the credit bureaus asking them to block access to those customer files. We sent a follow-up letter to each potentially affected customer notifying them about the situation. As a precautionary measure, we also changed the subscriber codes allegedly used to gain unauthorized access to the credit bureau files.
We continue to work closely with law enforcement officials.
