|WaMu Named Bank with Best Reputation in U.S. by Reputation Institute|
Consumers Choose WaMu as Only Bank on Top 50 List
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2007--Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE:WM), one of the nation's leading consumer and small business banking companies, was the only bank named in the 50 best regarded companies in the United States according to a global study of corporate reputations.
According to U.S. consumers recently surveyed by the Reputation Institute, WaMu placed 38th on a list of the nation's largest companies, putting WaMu in an elite group of the 50 best regarded companies in the United States. WaMu commanded the highest reputation score of U.S. banking companies and was the only one of its peer group included in the top 50.
WaMu's reputation score is above the average rating of all companies rated by consumers in 29 countries. The reputation score is a reflection of seven dimensions including leadership, citizenship, governance, workplace, innovation, products and services, and performance.
"WaMu takes its corporate reputation very seriously and we're honored to have earned the public's trust, respect and admiration," said Kerry Killinger, WaMu's Chairman and CEO. "Our reputation is one of our most important assets and helps make WaMu a place where people want to bank, invest and work. "
The study surveyed more than 60,000 consumers in 29 countries on six continents to measure the corporate reputations of 600 of the world's largest companies. More than 175,000 ratings were collected to develop reliable measurements of the corporate reputation of more than 1,000 companies. Companies were rated by consumers in their home country.
The Reputation Institute recognition is the latest in a series of accolades for WaMu. In March, BusinessWeek magazine named WaMu a Top 25 Service Champ, again the only bank to make the list. In addition, Fortune magazine designated WaMu a 2006 Blue Ribbon Company as a result of its designation on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For, America's Most Admired Companies, Fortune 500 and Global 500.
WaMu, through its subsidiaries, is one of the nation's leading consumer and small business banks. At March 31, 2007, WaMu and its subsidiaries had assets of $319.99 billion. The company has a history dating back to 1889 and its subsidiary banks currently operate more than 2,700 consumer and small business banking stores throughout the nation.
