The Legend of Rudolph
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer came to life in 1939 when Montgomery Ward Company
asked one of its writers, Robert L. May, to write a book that it could give
away to customers at its stores during the holiday season. The stores gave away
a total of six million copies of the book between 1939 and 1946. Gene Autry
recorded a musical version of the book in 1949 and the television special was
produced in1964 immortalizing what has become a classic tradition for the holidays.
Since the special first aired, more than 100 million families have tuned in
to watch "the most famous reindeer of all" and his friends, Hermey
the Elf, Yukon Cornelius and Bumble the Abominable Snowmonster. The classic
Animagic special continues to air annually on CBS and features a world-renowned
original musical score and the voice talent of Burl Ives. For more information
