MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2007--Journal Communications, Inc. (NYSE:JRN) announced today that for the ninth period ended September 30, 2007, total revenues from continuing operations for its Publishing and Broadcast groups of $47.82 million decreased 7.1% compared to $51.45 million reported for the ninth period ended September 24, 2006. For the ninth period 2007, advertising revenues from continuing operations of $41.33 million decreased 8.3% compared to $45.07 million for the 2006 ninth period. Both periods contained 35 days.

Note that unless otherwise indicated, all comparisons are to the ninth period ended September 24, 2006.

At the Publishing segment, revenues from continuing operations at the daily newspaper and the community newspapers and shoppers totaled $25.79 million, down 5.1% compared to $27.17 million. Advertising revenue from continuing operations was $19.30 million, down 7.2% compared to $20.79 million. Circulation revenue from continuing operations of $5.07 million was down 4.9% compared to $5.33 million. Other revenue from continuing operations of $1.42 million was up 35.6%.

At the daily newspaper, total advertising revenue was $15.88 million, down 5.1% compared to $16.74 million. Specifically, retail advertising was up 1.5%, classified advertising revenue was down 15.1%, national advertising revenue of $0.98 million decreased 9.2% and direct marketing revenue of $0.44 million was up 32.6%. Within classified advertising, the other vertical increased 21.0% and the help wanted, real estate/rentals and auto verticals were down 18.3%, 25.3% and 10.8%, respectively. Circulation revenue at the daily newspaper was $4.99 million, down 2.9% compared to $5.14 million. Other revenue at the daily newspaper of $1.03 million was up 34.7% compared to $0.76 million. Total interactive advertising revenue at the daily newspaper, which is reflected in the various revenue categories, increased 25.4% to $1.21 million compared to $0.96 million.

At the Company's community newspapers and shoppers operations, total advertising revenue from continuing operations was $3.42 million, down 15.6% compared to $4.06 million. This largely reflects certain revenue previously reported by the community newspapers and shoppers division that is now reported under the daily newspaper, coupled with declines in retail advertising revenue from continuing operations (down 13.6%) and classified advertising revenue from continuing operations (down 24.1%). Other advertising revenue from continuing operations was flat. Circulation revenue from continuing operations at the community newspapers and shoppers of $88,000 decreased 55.1%, largely reflecting the change to a free distribution model of our Milwaukee-area community newspapers. Other revenue from continuing operations at the community newspapers and shoppers of $0.39 million increased 37.9%.

At the Broadcasting segment, total revenue at the Company's radio and television stations of $22.03 million decreased 9.3% compared to $24.27 million. At the radio group, revenue of $8.96 million was down 5.1%, due primarily to a decline of $0.17 million in political and issue advertising revenue. On a same-station basis (excluding revenue generated by KBBX-FM, which was sold in September 2006 and KOMJ-AM, which was sold earlier this year), radio revenue for the ninth period 2007 decreased 3.2%. At the television group, revenue decreased 11.9% to $13.07 million compared to $14.83 million, primarily due to a decline in political and issue advertising revenue of $1.80 million and a reduction in national advertising revenue.
