MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 23, 2007--Journal Communications, Inc. (NYSE:JRN) announced today that for the sixth period ended July 1, 2007, total revenues from continuing operations for its Publishing and Broadcast groups of $45.69 million increased 1.3% compared to $45.11 million reported for the sixth period ended June 25, 2006. For the sixth period 2007, advertising revenues from continuing operations of $39.39 million increased 1.8% compared to $38.68 million for the 2006 sixth period. Both periods contained 35 days.

Both total revenues from continuing operations and advertising revenues from continuing operations for the sixth period 2006 were impacted negatively by a $5.06 million reduction of revenue related a litigation settlement.

Note that unless otherwise indicated, all comparisons are to the sixth period ended June 25, 2006.

At the Publishing segment, revenues from continuing operations at the daily newspaper and the community newspapers and shoppers totaled $25.41 million, up 12.6% compared to $22.58 million. Advertising revenue from continuing operations was $19.11 million, up 18.3% compared to $16.15 million. Excluding the $5.06 million reduction of revenue in 2006, Publishing total revenues from continuing operations and Publishing advertising revenues from continuing operations were down 8.0% and 9.9%, respectively. Circulation revenue from continuing operations of $5.01 million was down 3.6% compared to $5.20 million. Other revenue from continuing operations of $1.29 million was up 5.2%.

At the daily newspaper, total advertising revenue was $15.60 million, up 32.8% compared to $11.74 million -- or down 7.1% excluding the $5.06 million reduction in revenue. Specifically, retail advertising was up 125.7% -- or down 4.6% excluding the reduction of revenue, classified advertising revenue was down 6.3%, national advertising revenue of $0.76 million decreased 38.4% and direct marketing revenue of $0.54 million was up 17.3%. Within classified advertising, the help wanted, real estate/rentals and auto verticals were down 2.2%, 14.7% and 7.1%, respectively, and the other vertical increased 1.5%. Circulation revenue at the daily newspaper was $4.92 million, down 1.3% compared to $4.99 million. Other revenue at the daily newspaper of $0.88 million was down 3.7% compared to $0.91 million. Total interactive advertising revenue at the daily newspaper, which is reflected in the various revenue categories, increased 46.1% to $1.25 million compared to $0.86 million.

At the Company's community newspapers and shoppers operations, total advertising revenue from continuing operations was $3.51 million, down 20.4% compared to $4.41 million. This largely reflects certain revenue previously reported by the community newspapers and shoppers division that is now reported under the daily newspaper. Specifically, retail advertising revenue from continuing operations was down 19.0%, classified advertising revenue from continuing operations decreased 28.2% and other advertising revenue from continuing operations of $0.04 million was up 44.0%. Circulation revenue from continuing operations at the community newspapers and shoppers of $0.09 million decreased 57.3%, largely reflecting the change to a free distribution model of our Milwaukee-area community newspapers. Other revenue from continuing operations at the community newspapers and shoppers of $0.42 million increased 30.8%.

At the Broadcasting segment, total revenue at the Company's radio and television stations of $20.28 million decreased 10.0% compared to $22.53 million. At the radio group, revenue was $8.38 million, down 3.9% compared to $8.73 million. On a same-station basis (excluding revenue generated by KBBX-FM, which was sold in September 2006 and KOMJ-AM, which was sold earlier this year), radio revenue for the sixth period 2007 decreased 2.1%. At the television group, revenue decreased 13.8% to $11.90 million compared to $13.81 million, primarily due to a decline in political and issue advertising revenue and national advertising.
