President and Chief Operating Officer – Journal Communications

Andre Fernandez was named President of Journal Communications (NYSE: JRN) in February 2012 and Chief Operating Officer in 2014. He served as the Company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) since joining Journal in 2008 through early 2014, when he assumed the position of Chief Operating Officer, responsible for operational oversight of the Broadcast and Publishing segments, as well as a number of corporate functions. Mr. Fernandez reports directly to Journal Communications Chairman and CEO, Steven Smith.

Prior to Journal, Fernandez held a variety of financial leadership roles at the General Electric Company (GE). Following GE/NBC’s acquisition of the Telemundo Communications Group, Fernandez was named SVP/CFO where he helped steer the company to its best financial performance in history, led the acquisitions of Telemundo-RTI Studios and Tepuy International, and helped create the Yahoo!Telemundo digital joint venture. He also helped establish the company’s studio joint venture in Mexico with Grupo Saba, along with a landmark content sharing agreement with Grupo Televisa via which, today, Telemundo is broadcasting its entertainment content in Mexico. Prior to Telemundo, Fernandez held the positions of CFO/Controller of GE Latin America based in Mexico City; CFO of GE’s Digital Energy business, based in Atlanta; Assistant Treasurer of GE Corporate Treasury and CFO of GE Capital Information Technology Solutions (ITS), both based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Prior to GE, Fernandez was FP&A and Treasury Manager for the United Technologies Corporation in both the US and Brazil. Fernandez began his career on Wall Street, first as a Banking Associate with Brown Brothers Harriman in New York, then as Assistant Vice President with Merrill Lynch’s emerging markets group in both New York and London. He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

A New York native, Fernandez graduated cum laude from Harvard University with an AB in Economics. He currently serves on the boards of the TV Bureau of Advertising (TVB), and Froedtert Health, a regional hospital system in southeast Wisconsin, for which he is also Chairman of the Finance Committee and Member of the Compensation Committee. He is a member of the Greater Milwaukee Committee (GMC) and recently served on the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's (MSO) task force on sustainability. Prior roles included Chairman of the Audit Committee of GE Capital Bank Mexico, and member of the Boards of Yahoo! Telemundo and Telemundo Studios Mexico. He is an active alumni interviewer for Harvard University.
