| Alterra Capital Appoints Bret Hilgart Vice President of Alterra USA |

HAMILTON, Bermuda, Jul 11, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alterra Capital Holdings Limited ("Alterra") (NASDAQ: ALTE; BSX: ALTE.BH) today announced the appointment of Bret Hilgart as Vice President, Underwriter of Alterra USA. Doug Worman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alterra USA, commented: "We are pleased that Bret Hilgart is joining Alterra USA. Bret is a diligent professional with a wealth of underwriting experience. We expect him to become a key member of our Executive Liability team, which should be well positioned to take advantage of attractive opportunities in this market as and when they arise." Bret Hilgart has more than eleven years of executive liability experience, most recently as a Vice President of IronPro, a division of Ironshore, overseeing management liability and related lines for its Central Region. Prior to joining Ironshore, Bret managed the national Financial Institutions practice for the Executive Assurance Division at Arch Insurance Company. Bret is a graduate of Southern Illinois University with a B.S. in Finance and specialization in Financial Institutions. Bret will underwrite from the New York office of Alterra USA.
