Wright Medical Group, Inc. Introduces PROFEMUR Tapered Stem Total Hip System

ARLINGTON, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2004--

New Tapered Stem Design Joins Wright's Family of Hip Implant Systems;

Ideally Suited for Minimally Invasive Surgical Approach

Wright Medical Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:WMGI), a global orthopaedic medical device company specializing in the design, manufacture and marketing of reconstructive joint devices and biologic materials, today announced the launch of its PROFEMUR(R) Tapered Stem Total Hip System. The new rounded, tapered stem design reduces the potential for implant loosening and thigh pain and requires the removal of less bone from within the femoral canal. The tapered stem feature complements the PROFEMUR(R) system's innovative modular neck design, which is specially suited for use with a smaller surgical incision.

The PROFEMUR(R) Tapered Stem Total Hip System is an integral part of Wright's ODYSSEY(sm) Tissue Preserving Initiative, a minimally invasive surgery program for hip, knee and total joint resurfacing procedures. Although many orthopaedic manufacturers and surgeons have developed minimally invasive techniques, Wright offers the only solution that includes an implant system with a design that specifically addresses the most common challenges associated with a minimally invasive approach. The PROFEMUR(R) Hip System's modular neck feature simplifies implant insertion and reduces the risk of soft-tissue damage. Wright's modular neck technology also offers surgeons unsurpassed flexibility in addressing a wide range of patient anatomies intraoperatively. Through the PROFEMUR(R) system's new tapered stem feature, the implant also provides improved stability and reduced procedure time.

"We have been working diligently to fill our modular neck stem portfolio to cover all existing philosophies in the marketplace," explains Aldo Denti, Vice President of Wright's OrthoRecon Division. "Wright is pleased to respond to U.S. surgeon demands for a rounded, tapered stem design, with the added benefits of PROFEMUR(R)'s progressive modular neck feature. For the many surgeons transitioning to a less invasive technique for hip arthroplasty, Wright offers the total package with the PROFEMUR(R) Tapered Stem."

The PROFEMUR(R) Tapered Stem Total Hip System represents the latest enhancement to Wright's family of innovative hip solutions featuring modular neck technology. The product family includes the PROFEMUR(R) Total Hip System, the PROFEMUR(R) E Hip Stem, the PROFEMUR(R) Z Hip Stem, the PROFEMUR(R) Plasma Z Hip Stem and the PROFEMUR(R) R Revision Prosthesis.
