capacity and logistics services was recognized by the U.S. Department of
Transportation for its service to residents along the U.S. Gulf Coast in the
aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta presented a plaque to Landstar
President and CEO Henry Gerkens with the words: "The partnership between
Landstar and the Department of Transportation provided vital support to the
Department of Homeland Security that positively impacted thousands of lives.
Through their professionalism, dedication and perseverance, the men and women
of Landstar reflect great credit upon themselves and the United States of
America."
With Landstar's assistance pursuant to a contract with the agency, the DOT
was able to deliver more than 15,500 truckloads of critical relief supplies --
including food, water, ice and shelter to help hurricane survivors. In
addition, according to the DOT, Landstar helped evacuate more than
89,000 residents from the New Orleans area by bus and aircraft to safe havens
throughout the region.
