U.S. Bank to Teach Children How to Be Smart Savers

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2007--On Tuesday, April 24, thousands of schoolchildren will learn from members of the their local U.S. Bank team how to save money during the 11th annual "National Teach Children to Save Day." This event is sponsored by the American Bankers Association (ABA) Education Foundation.

The ABA Education Foundation's National Teach Children to Save Day is a day when thousands of bankers across the country make presentations in schools to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. During National Teach Children To Save Day in 2006, more than 10,000 bankers, including U.S. Bank employee volunteers, gave nearly half a million students basic saving and money management lessons. These efforts help students learn not only why it's important to save money, but how to make it a part of their lifestyle.

"Smart money managers are not born, they're made," said Laura Fisher, director of the ABA Education Foundation. "The sooner children learn about saving, spending and budgeting, the sooner they can develop good financial habits."

"Bankers have an opportunity to play an important role in children's lives, which can positively impact their financial well-being for many years," said Richard Davis, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Bancorp, the parent company of U.S. Bank. "More than 260 U.S. Bank employee volunteers throughout our markets will be doing their part to help schoolchildren in their communities learn how saving money can help enrich their lives."

Topics that will be covered include budgeting, why it's important to save for emergencies, savings goals, how interest makes money grow, the difference between needs and wants. Students will have an opportunity to apply concepts and practices through games and other interactive, fun activities appropriate for their grade level.
