Two Top-ranked California Teams Head to U.S. Bank Beach Bowl

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec 2, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The LA Harbor College Seahawks will battle the Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles in the third annual U.S. Bank Beach Bowl on December 7 at 1 p.m. at Santa Monica College's Corsair stadium.

The game features two teams coming off extremely successful seasons, both ranked in the top 15 in the California Community College Football Poll for Southern California. Finishing the season by winning five of its last six games, LA Harbor College completed a 7-3 campaign, earning Southern California's #11 ranking and a match-up with the #12 Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles. Mt. San Jacinto, which finished 6-4, completed its sixth straight winning season.

"Our entire team is looking forward to the game. The U.S. Bank Beach Bowl has quickly built a reputation as being a high quality bowl game," said Mt. San Jacinto Head Coach, Gregg Shaw. "LA Harbor has played incredibly well lately and we are looking forward to the challenge."

"We have improved each of the three years that this coaching staff has been at LA Harbor and being selected to go to the U.S. Bank Beach Bowl is a testament to that," said LA Harbor Head Coach Steve Schmitz. "We are anticipating a great game with Mt. San Jacinto and look forward to ending our season on a high note."

The U.S. Bank Beach Bowl became part of the California Community College bowl series in 2000 when Santa Monica College defeated Citrus College in the inaugural game. In 2001, Glendale College defeated Fullerton College, 28-13. U.S. Bank's assistance was integral to the sanctioning of the game.

"We are very grateful that U.S. Bank has chosen to sponsor this bowl game which means a lot to our school and Community College football. We deeply appreciate our year-round partnership with U.S. Bank in putting together what should be another incredibly exciting game," said Charlie Wright, Santa Monica athletic director and game organizer. U.S. Bank is continuing its support of Santa Monica and the entire Los Angeles and Orange County areas, where it has contributed more than $300,000 in grants in 2002.
