U.S. Bancorp's Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer File Sworn Statements

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 7, 2002--U.S. Bancorp
(NYSE:USB) today announced that Jerry A. Grundhofer, president and chief executive officer, and David M. Moffett, vice chairman and chief financial officer, have signed and filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sworn statements regarding the accuracy of the company's recent reports filed with the SEC.

Grundhofer and Moffett are complying well in advance of the SEC's required signing date of August 14, 2002. On June 27, 2002, the SEC ordered that 947 large public U.S. companies would be required to have their principal executive officer and principal financial officer file sworn statements regarding the accuracy of their company's recent reports filed with the SEC. As required by the SEC's order, the sworn statements filed today relate to the company's annual report on Form 10-K for 2001, quarterly report on Form 10-Q for the first quarter of 2002, proxy statement for the 2002 annual shareholders' meeting and two reports on Form 8-K regarding the company's earnings press releases for the first and second quarters of 2002. The company anticipates filing next week its report on Form 10-Q for the second quarter of 2002, which will be accompanied by certifications by Grundhofer and Moffett in accordance with the recently enacted Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.
