New Pastrami Burger Is Unexpected Fast Food Fare

CARPINTERIA, Calif., Nov 17, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- New York deli, meet hip burger joint. In the ultimate marriage of taste and innovation, Carl's Jr. has combined the classic pastrami sandwich and a great quality burger to create an exceptionally original fast-food eating experience. Today, the new Pastrami Burger(TM) debuts at more than 1,000 Carl's Jr. restaurants.

Pastrami burgers have long been "insider" favorites at restaurants like The Hat in Los Angeles and Crown Burgers in Salt Lake City -- well-known "burger joints" that feature specialty hamburgers. But the QSR industry hadn't caught on to their underground popularity and cult following until now. Carl's Jr. is the first leading fast food chain to offer the time-honored sandwich.

"When I first heard about the Pastrami Burger, it frankly seemed like an odd idea," said Brad Haley, Carl's Jr. executive vice president of marketing. "But it's one of those burgers that looks and tastes so good, we had to test it, and when we did, we got a very positive reaction from consumers. The tastes of pastrami piled on top of a delicious burger just seem to go together. In fact, Carl's Jr. has many great burgers but this is my new favorite."

The Carl's Jr. adaptation of the Pastrami Burger features an all-beef patty topped with thinly sliced pastrami, red onion, dill pickles, lettuce, tomato and mustard, sandwiched between two toasted, seeded buns. Participating Carl's Jr. restaurants will offer the Pastrami Burger at a suggested retail price of $3.79 for a single and $4.79 for a double.

As of the end of the second quarter on Aug. 9, 2004, CKE Restaurants, Inc., through its subsidiaries, had a total of 3,206 franchised or company-owned restaurants in 44 states and in 13 countries, including 1,016 Carl's Jr. restaurants, 2,067 Hardee's(R) restaurants and 105 La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill(R) restaurants.
