Simon and Turner Broadcasting Engage ESI and SFX in the Development of Their Mall-Based Entertainment Network
NEW YORK, May 23, 2000 - - Simon Brand Ventures, a strategic business initiative of Simon Property Group, the nation’s largest mall owner and manager, and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company and the leading provider of news, entertainment and sports programming in the television industry, are moving forward in the growth of their mall-based media network. Today they announced that they have engaged Edwin Schlossberg Incorporated (ESI), a New York-based design firm that creates interactive experiences in a variety of contexts, and SFX, the world’s leading promoter, producer and presenter of live entertainment events, in the development of the network that is scheduled to pilot in the fourth quarter of 2000.
ESI is creating the structures that will host the many components of the network that make up a dynamic, entertainment experience for the 100 million shoppers that make 2 billion visits to Simon malls each year. These structures are designed to engage consumers in entertainment and interaction and influence buying decision.
ESI has over twenty years experience in designing entertainment and learning environments that stimulate visitors' curiosity, intellect, and sense of adventure. Current projects include the design of a public visitor program for a new cultural center devoted to the life and work of Pope John Paul II and the design of a resource center to be located at the Ellis Island Museum that will help visitors learn more about immigration and their family's history.
SFX will coordinate live events that will be integrated into the Simon/Turner network by drawing upon the talents and programs of the world’s most successful “brand names” that comprise its music, theater, family entertainment, motor sports, sports and multimedia divisions. In 1999, a staggering 60 million people attended over 23,000 events promoted and/or produced by SFX. SFX is currently producing national tours for such noted musicians as Santana, Sting, and the Backstreet Boys, as well as the broadway touring company of “Rent.”
“Our alliance with ESI and SFX will enable us to work with two quality, innovative companies that can help to bring the mall alive through our new alliance with Turner Broadcasting,” said Drew Sheinman, senior vice president of marketing and business development of Simon Brand Ventures.
Simon and Turner Broadcasting formed a strategic alliance this past November to combine resources and expertise to develop the first-ever live, entertainment network and multi-media platform of its kind, that will integrate the Internet and other technology platforms. This private, retail entertainment network will feature original and branded programming from the portfolio of TBS, Inc. networks, which includes CNN, TNT and Cartoon Network.
“Combining the design expertise of ESI with the live event specialization of SFX will aid in our development of a unique entertainment and information environment,” said Joe Uva, president of sales and marketing of Turner Entertainment Group. “This network will provide Turner an opportunity to further showcase our original and branded programming among our viewers.”
“ESI's designs for the mall network structures meet Simon/Turner's goals by offering consumers unexpected, dynamic environments where they can participate in a range of activities. People can explore the network on their own or share in group activities, making the mall a true center of the community,” said Edwin Schlossberg, president of Edwin Schlossberg Incorporated.
“Participating in the development of the Simon/Turner network underscores SFX’s positioning as the one-stop-shop for access to a broad range of live entertainment for our various constituencies, from consumers to marketers.” said David Sass, executive vice president of SFX Marketing.
