Supplies Paging Units for Nationwide Emergency Medical Response
System
ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 2007--USA Mobility,
Inc. (Nasdaq: USMO), a leading provider of wireless messaging and
communications services, today announced it has expanded its business
relationship with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS) by providing additional paging units for the National Disaster
Medical System (NDMS), the agency's nationwide emergency medical
response system.
Under terms of the agreement, DHHS will distribute approximately
500 nationwide alphanumeric paging units to NDMS personnel located at
sites throughout the country as well as to agency personnel at DHHS
headquarters in Washington, D.C.
USA Mobility established a relationship with DHHS last November
when the federal agency, which is responsible for providing medical
and other essential services in emergency situations, implemented 980
two-way messaging units now being used nationwide by its Rapid
Deployment Forces, Incident Response Coordination Teams and Applied
Public Health Teams. DHHS acquired the two-way units after government
studies showed relief efforts following the events of September 11,
2001 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were delayed by the failures of
other communications networks (e.g. landline and cellular telephones)
while paging networks performed exceptionally well. As a result,
federal agencies began adding a tertiary level of wireless
communications with nationwide two-way capability for use in disaster
scenarios.
"We are pleased to broaden our relationship with DHHS and help the
agency meet its emergency response communications needs," said Jim
Boso, USA Mobility's executive vice president of sales and marketing.
"Along with messaging devices, we are providing training to all
end-users as well as engineering and IT support to ensure their
messaging platform is optimized to communicate most effectively with
personnel in the field."
Boso added: "Over time, we hope to provide DHHS with additional
devices and communications resources as they pursue their goal of
providing up to 9,000 NDMS members nationwide with efficient and
cost-effective paging devices that offer the agency a reliable and
redundant form of wireless communication. Included among devices
they're considering for first responder medical personnel are pagers
specifically programmed to provide alerts to potentially thousands of
users simultaneously, thus eliminating the need for users to carry
secondary pagers for only that purpose."
In connection with USA Mobility's ongoing effort to educate first
responders and emergency response services to the proven advantages of
paging and two-way data networks, Boso said the Company participated
in the Disaster and Recovery Expo in Nashville, TN in March that was
held in conjunction with an NDMS conference on emergency preparedness.
