New BodySearch™ X-ray Technology Unveiled in Montana State Prison

BILLERICA, MA, April 7, 1998 -- A new high-technology imaging device called BodySearch™ was unveiled to officials and the media at Deer Lodge State Prison, Montana, on April 3, 1998. The unique x-ray imaging system is designed to quickly and safely detect both metallic and organic materials such as drugs, weapons and illegal contraband. The Montana application of the machine marks the first such use of BodySearch™ in a prison facility in the United States.

The BodySearch™ device is manufactured by American Science & Engineering, Inc. (AMEX:ASE) of Billerica, Massachusetts. BodySearch™ uses AS&E®'s patented Z® Backscatter technology to quickly scan inmates returning to the cellblocks from work areas, where contraband and weapons smuggling can often occur. The quick imaging process eliminates the need for labor intensive strip searches. The scan requires no physical contact between the operator and the subject, thus vastly reducing the threat of assault against law enforcement personnel and the spread of communicable diseases.

"BodySearch™ provides our law enforcement community with another important tool to combat prison violence," stated Ralph S. Sheridan, CEO and President of American Science & Engineering, Inc. "The result is increased safety in the corrections facility, and a cost-effective approach to searching prisoners. This is an ideal application for BodySearch™."

The BodySearch™ device was installed late in 1997, and has been in a testing and operator training period since its installation. According to Warden Mike Mahoney of the Montana State Prison, "the unit has enabled us to search large numbers of inmates in an efficient manner on a daily basis. This equates to good security and efficient searches of inmates that work both outside the fence or within the single fenced Industries Compound. I believe we will be seeing more of this type of technology in Corrections."

AS&E® develops and manufactures sophisticated X-ray inspection products for critical detection and security applications. AS&E®'s patented Z® Backscatter technology detects plastic explosives, illegal drugs, and other contraband, even when artfully concealed in complex backgrounds by terrorists and smugglers.
