American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $4 Million Order for Multiple ZBVs and SmartCheck Personnel Screening Systems from New African Customer

Systems will be used for checkpoint security at high-threat facilities

BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2007--American Science and Engineering, Inc. (AS&E(R)) (NASDAQ: ASEI), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the receipt of a $4 million contract for multiple Z Backscatter Vans and SmartCheck Personnel Screening Systems from a new African Customer. Two of the ZBVs will be equipped with Forwardscatter capability, and all of the systems include service and maintenance training, and extended warranty.

"This new African client has responded to AS&E's full-range of product offerings and the benefits of our signature technology, Z Backscatter," said Anthony Fabiano, President and CEO. "This customer will utilize their ZBVs and SmartCheck systems at strategic locations to enhance their checkpoint security. These systems will provide comprehensive detection to secure high-threat facilities from a broad range of threats."

About SmartCheck(TM)

SmartCheck is a safe, non-intrusive personnel screening system that allows operators to detect threats and contraband hidden on a person while ensuring privacy. AS&E's patented Z Backscatter X-ray technology displays both organic and inorganic materials, revealing objects such as guns and knives, explosives, composite weapons, and other hidden threats and contraband. The software provides a sketch outline of the passenger with information for the security operator to identify the nature and location of threats, thus eliminating the need for intrusive and time-consuming pat-down searches. For added privacy, the system is not capable of storing, exporting, printing, or transmitting images. All images are automatically deleted from the system immediately after they are reviewed by the operator who is located in a remote, secure area away from the screening process.

About Z(R) Backscatter Van(TM) (ZBV(TM))

AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly maneuverable screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV employs AS&E's patented Z(R) Backscatter(TM) technology, which reveals contraband that transmission X-rays miss -- such as explosives and plastic weapons -- and provides photo-like imaging for rapid analysis. The ZBV is capable of immediate deployment in response to security threats, and features a high throughput capacity to facilitate rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging of suspect vehicles and objects as the ZBV drives past.

About Forwardscatter(TM) Technology

AS&E offers Forwardscatter technology to complement AS&E's patented Z Backscatter technology. Forwardscatter presents a second scatter perspective that displays dense regions of scanned vehicles. This unique technology is ideally suited to display dense objects, such as the shielding found around nuclear weapons of mass destruction (WMD) or other metallic threats. Detector modules positioned opposite the X-ray source capture X-rays scattered in the forward direction, maintaining the rapid detection capability of Z Backscatter technology. Forwardscatter is available as an option for AS&E's Z Backscatter Van (ZBV), Z Portal(TM) screening system and RDIM(TM) (Ruggedized Detection Imaging Module).
