| American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $5.9 Million Service and Maintenance Contract from U.S. Government |
One-Year Renewal Contract to Service Multiple ZBVs and Ruggedized Detection Imaging Modules BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2007--American Science and Engineering, Inc. (AS&E(R)) (NASDAQ: ASEI), a leader in X-ray detection technology, announced today the U.S. Government has renewed a one-year service and maintenance contract for multiple Z(R) Backscatter Vans(TM) (ZBV(TM)) and Ruggedized Detection Imaging Modules(TM) (RDIM). The contract is valued at $5.9 million. "This service contract renewal will ensure that our key U.S Government client will continue to receive superior service and support for their fleet of ZBVs and RDIM modules," said Anthony Fabiano, President and CEO. "We are delighted with the continued overall success of our service business -- specifically, the very high customer satisfaction ratings and the increased backlog through consistent bookings." AS&E's highly skilled Field Service Engineers (FSEs) provide support services worldwide. Each FSE, with a technical degree in electrical and mechanical engineering or equivalent experience, is trained in the operation and repair of electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanics, electrical systems, and computers. Available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, FSEs are located at AS&E offices in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. About Z(R) Backscatter Van(TM) (ZBV(TM)) AS&E's Z Backscatter Van is a low-cost, highly maneuverable screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV employs AS&E's patented Z(R) Backscatter(TM) technology, which reveals contraband that transmission X-rays miss -- such as explosives and plastic weapons -- and provides photo-like imaging for rapid analysis. The ZBV is capable of immediate deployment in response to security threats, and features a high throughput capacity to facilitate rapid inspections. The system's unique "drive-by" capability allows one or two operators to conduct X-ray imaging of suspect vehicles and objects as the ZBV drives past. About Ruggedized Detection Imaging Module(TM) (RDIM) The Ruggedized Detection Imaging Module(TM) (RDIM) is a relocatable Z(R) Backscatter(TM) imaging system for screening vehicles at a security checkpoint or border crossing. Security officials can screen vehicles and their cargo for terrorist threats and contraband simply by directing vehicles to drive past the system. RDIM employs AS&E's patented Z Backscatter technology, which produces photolike images of the contents of a vehicle, highlighting organic materials, such as explosives. The system is built in three separate modules that can be connected to form a standard 20 foot ISO container for ease of relocation. The system has been designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, as well as shock and vibration. RDIM is safe for operators, scanned vehicles and their drivers, and the environment. Forwardscatter is an option for RDIM that complements Backscatter imaging and presents a second scatter perspective that displays dense regions of scanned vehicles. This unique technology is ideally suited to display dense objects, such as the shielding found around nuclear weapons of mass destruction (WMD) or other metallic threats.
