Veeco Introduces New ``Low-Cost, High-Value'' Scanning Probe Microscope

WOODBURY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 2006--Veeco Instruments Inc. (Nasdaq: VECO), the world's leading provider of atomic force microscopes for research applications, today announced the launch of it's new Caliber(TM) low-cost, high-value scanning probe microscope (SPM). The Caliber is able to perform a variety of SPM research and industrial applications on samples of various sizes. The instrument is being shown for the first time on July 18 at Veeco's Annual "Seeing at the Nanoscale Conference," this year being held at the University of Pennsylvania.

According to Jeannine Sargent, Executive Vice President, Veeco Metrology & Instrumentation, "Our new Caliber "mini-SPM" provides a highly affordable, compact and flexible research solution for materials, surface sciences, and polymer studies. Furthermore, the Caliber's attractive price point will make Veeco's industry leading SPM technology attainable to a broader group of industrial researchers and makes an excellent entry-point SPM for new users in an educational setting or in emerging high-tech growth markets such as China and India."

"With closed-loop scanning and the ability to scan up to 90um on almost any surface, the Caliber offers big SPM functionality in a tiny footprint," added David Rossi, Vice President of Marketing for Veeco's Instrumentation products. "Researchers and industrial manufacturers with more limited funding can now benefit from Veeco's cutting-edge SPM technology that has revolutionized the nanosciences. Our beta customers have reacted positively to the new Caliber, commenting that its impressive performance and small footprint allow portability which is important in a multi-user research lab."

The Caliber's open-platform, closed-loop design allows researchers to customize hardware and optimize electronics for excellent application versatility. The Caliber's streamlined operational convenience facilitates a broad array of stand-alone experiments. Other features include real-time software with line-by line analysis, oscilloscope, FFT, and leveling functions.

Veeco is the world leader in atomic force and scanning probe microscopy, with an installed base of over 7,000 systems at university and research/nanotechnology centers worldwide.
