The New York Times Announces Special Inauguration Coverage

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 15, 2009--The New York Times announced today special inauguration coverage to appear in The Times, The New York Times Magazine and on NYTimes.com. The Times's high-quality journalism and photography, and new multimedia features on NYTimes.com, will provide readers with extensive coverage in print and online to mark this unprecedented event in United States history.

In the newspaper on Jan. 16, The Times will expand its inauguration coverage in the Weekend Arts section by publishing a cultural guide to Washington on the eve of the inauguration. The guide will include critics' picks of the city's wealth of museums, monuments, arts, clubs and restaurants.

On Jan. 18, The New York Times Magazine will devote an entire issue to "Obama's People." Renowned photographer, Nadav Kander captures the new administration in a series of 52 portraits including Vice President-elect, Joseph R. Biden Jr.; incoming White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel; incoming secretary of state, Hillary Clinton; and other top advisors and aides. The photographs will also be featured on NYTimes.com/Magazine, with an audio slideshow narrated by Mr. Kander.

NYTimes.com will feature live video streaming of the inauguration speech and ceremony and will present new multimedia, interactive and blog features such as:

  • User-submitted photos from the inauguration weekend;
  • The story of one historic city block in Washington where residents will open their doors to visitors on inauguration day;
  • Audio recordings of Americans around the country expressing their greatest hopes for the new administration. NYTimes.com users can vote on these;
  • "100 Days" - a new Times Op-Ed page blog that will feature five presidential biographers discussing the first three months in office of five 20th-century presidents;
  • Room for Debate - news/opinion blog will have posts by former presidential speechwriters on what to look for in President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration speech.

The Times will also run a news special section on Jan. 21 in the paper with in-depth coverage from Washington covering all aspects of the inauguration.

The Times anticipates a heightened demand for the Jan. 21 issue and will be increasing the print order to 2.2 million copies. Additional copies will be sold at The New York Times headquarters for the regular newsstand price of $1.50 on Jan. 21 - 23. There will also be additional hawkers on the streets of New York, Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles.

Strong sales of The Times's Nov. 5 issue and election-related products, totaled $2.3 million in revenues through the end of December.
