Amerada Hess Enters Into A New Exploration Permit Offshore Brunei Darussalam

Amerada Hess (NYSE: AHC) has signed a Production Sharing Agreement with the Brunei
National Petroleum Company for Block J in the deep offshore waters of Brunei Darussalam.
Amerada Hess has a 15% interest in a joint venture with Total Fina Elf which has
a 60% interest and is the operator and BHPBilliton which has a 25% interest. This
Block has been awarded following the International Licensing round launched by
the Government of Brunei Darussalam in January 2001.
Block J covers an area of approximately 5,000 square kilometers and its southern boundary is located around 100 kilometers Northwest of Brunei Darussalam in water depths of between 800 and 2,100 meters.
